Nudging Amazon off the top spot

New data on the physical entertainment market from Kantar Worldpanel has revealed this week that HMV has overtaken Amazon in the 12 weeks ending 25 September to become the UK’s largest music retailer, attracting 41,000 new shoppers along the way.

HMV has had to face increasing competition from specialist independent stores as well as supermarket giants looking to get in on the vinyl act. Sainsbury’s in particular has been active in the physical music market this year, ramping up its efforts to offer a wide range of vinyl instore throughout 2016.

Despite the growth in competition, HMV has grown its share of the overall physical entertainment market by 3.1%.

Featured in the Which? Top 100 Online Shops

The home of entertainment ranked above major retailers including H&M, Play.com, Missguided, and Sainsbury’s.

In its November issue, Which? has produced a feature story on the Best and Worst Online Shops 2016 to discover what the nation really thinks about where to shop online. HMV was featured in the top 100 online shops rated by their customers, and came 9th in the Entertainment category.

In June 2016, Which? asked 10,509 members of the UK public about shopping online in the previous six months to see where consumers believe they get a good deal – whether that’s deliveries arriving on time, good prices, or ensuring that items match their descriptions.

HMV received a special mention in the watchdog’s entertainment write-up: ‘high street stalwart HMV’s online offering has a decent ranking of ninth place, and many find its website simple to use’.
